Dmitri Shostakovich

Violin Concerto no. 2 in C sharp minor, op. 129

Op. 129

Composed 1966

Orchestral

The Violin Concerto No. 2 in C♯ minor, Op. 129, was Dmitri Shostakovich's last concerto. He wrote it in the spring of 1967 and intended it to serve as a 60th birthday present for its dedicatee, David Oistrakh, in September. Shostakovich had mistaken Oistrakh's age, however; he actually turned 59 that year. It was premiered unofficially in Bolshevo, near Moscow, on 13 September 1967, and officially on 26 September by Oistrakh and the Moscow Philharmonic under Kirill Kondrashin in Moscow.
